Very few flooring trends can last the distance and remain universally popular. Parquet flooring is a traditional design that can move seamlessly between both a classic and contemporary style. This versatility and availability in a range of materials means that it stays firmly on the list of interior design trends.
What is parquet flooring?
When we refer to parquet flooring, this is simply a type of flooring, traditionally done in wood, although now more modernly available in laminate, LVT or engineered wood, that has a distinct, repeated pattern.
Parquet design options
The timeless parquet design is hugely popular for a reason. Parquet patterns offer a beautiful statement for any room in the house, the decorative intricacy offering an elegance that many people find attractive.
There are three popular patterns that you may come across when looking at parquet floor designs – Herringbone and Chevron.
- Herringbone: A herringbone design is a series of rectangular wood, laminate and vinyl planks placed at 90-degree angles to each other in a repeating “V” pattern, to create a stunning visual layout. So called, as the pattern resembles that of a rib cage from a herring, this type of parquet flooring can be used to create different patterns if you wish to stray out of the classic design.
- Chevron: The Chevron flooring pattern is another popular pattern for parquet flooring, and like the herringbone pattern, it forms a repeated inverted “V” shape when laid out. However, the planks are cut at a 45-degree angle to fit together, rather than the rectangular shaped planks of the herringbone pattern.
- Versailles Tiles: This pattern is a classic square design that can be plain or feature intricate decorative patterns within each square. Traditionally made up of different sized squares, you can now get equal tiles to form a uniformed repeated pattern to flow with the room.
No matter the pattern, parquet flooring offers you the ability to create interest and a splash of luxury to your home. You will love parquet flooring for its availability in a range of colours and finishes which can be perfectly matched to your personal taste and home décor.
If you are more traditional in your design, you can go for a classic dark wood finish for a rich sophistication. If you are more modern with your tastes, then you can buy laminate vinyl tiles in grey that provide the perfect modern twist on the archetypal parquet flooring.
Parquet flooring materials
One of the reasons to love parquet flooring is its availability and versatility in a range of flooring materials. It can be bought in the following:
- Solid Wood
- Engineered Wood
- Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT)
- Laminate
This variety also allows for a wider range of plank widths and thicknesses, which is particularly important when considering a parquet design.
As well as sizes, you can find your ideal finish, if you want a wood finish but want it a little more friendly to the rigours of family life, then choose a wood effect laminate. If you like the idea of real wood, then you have the choice between solid and engineered wood. Both have a tough nature, which makes it suitable for a variety of spaces, including hallways and lounges.
Installation
If you are thinking of buying parquet flooring, then you may want to take into consideration how easy it is to install. This will depend on several factors, primarily what type of flooring you have chosen.
If you go for solid wood or engineered wood flooring, then installation will likely need to be carried out by a specialist fitter, however, thanks to modern technology, some businesses will offer types of this flooring with an interlocking "click" system, which makes installation simple and straightforward. You simply click each board with the next, to create a floating floor that does not require any glues or adhesives and can be easily taken up again if you wish to redecorate or redesign your room in the future.
LVT or laminate can be installed as a DIY project as these types of flooring are easier than wood flooring.
